I’ve been losing lots of key lately

I don’t know what that means

But maybe I’d be better off with things that can’t be locked at all

(Jack Johnson “Losing Keys”)

Before investing thousands of dollars and hours of time on intrusion detection, endpoint security, content filtering, disaster recovery, etc., consider shifting your cybersecurity posture from reactive defenses to proactive risk reduction.

To start:

  • Rethink what needs protecting (eliminate unnecessary data retention; avoid storing sensitive information unless absolutely required)

  • Identify vulnerabilities that pose the greatest risk to your business as opposed to chasing every threat

  • Design systems, operations and processes that don’t rely on lockable assets

These steps will not eliminate the need to take the appropriate cybersecurity measures to protect your business, but this philosophical shift can drastically reduce the “attack surface” of your business and the need for complex security layers.
